Friend of God

Have you been there? Down, depressed, overwhelmed by the words and actions of others? Hopeless, fearful, inadequate, unworthy? Come with me to the mountain. Listen to what a friend of God would hear. He’s waiting for you!

Friend of God

I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15

I awakened from troubled dreams arising from the previous day’s events, oppressed before my day began. Human words filled my mind and heart with thoughts contrary to God’s word, opposed to His calling and plans for me.

I opened the door to cool, rain-washed air and breathed deep. God whispered that the morning freshness and His word would cure the lies circling in my head like vultures.

I looked up to the mountains outside my window before turning to the scripture. God’s word was so appropriate to my needs that it tightened my throat and filled my eyes with tears. “In the morning…come up…Present yourself to me there on top of the mountains” (Exodus 34:1). It was if He called to me, “Don’t stay in the valley oppressed and overwhelmed. Come up. Sit with me. Hear my perspective rather than the lies of man. Present yourself to me here on the mountain. Hear me whisper the truth of what I made you to be.”

I challenge myself each morning to find a photograph to accompany the scripture, something that secures its meaning in my heart and allows me to share a visual image with others, as well. That morning it was a photograph from our recent visit to Glacier National Park, the Garden Wall, one of the most stunning features of the park. Only eagles and those with a far greater spirit of adventure than I, dare to scale its heights. Yet, God invited me to soar above my troubled world and gain His lofty perspective where everything fades to minuscule insignificance beside His glory.

Words from Job, Psalms, and Proverbs expelled the gloom from my heart. A favorite song that speaks of God changing my name to fit who He calls me to be reminded me that God doesn’t see me as a lonely outcast, afraid of my shadow, afraid of what people think. Feelings of worthlessness and rejection do not come from Him.

God sees me changed, perfect as I will one day be. He offers the power of His Holy Spirit to overcome today, to see myself in His eyes. He offers confidence, joy, and calls me faithful for seeking His face. The God of the universe calls me “friend”.

I still have problems to deal with, in God’s time. Today, I will rest in knowing I am the friend of God and He has a glorious plan and purpose for me. My time on the mountaintop restored my sense of hope and gave a fresh start to my day.

When gloominess and struggle threaten the reality of who we are in God’s eyes, we must meet Him on the mountain. He will never disappoint.
