Created for Peace

Our hearts and our world cry out for peace this Christmas season as our world is rocked by worsening acts of terror and fear. Discover the gift of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, this Christmas. We were created for peace.

Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace. Jeremiah 6:14

“Mom, I wish Adam and Eve had never sinned.” My son’s words, so innocent and sweet, voiced the longing of every heart—the desire for peace, a desire for a lack of struggle and strife. Each of us hopes for peace and understanding, some semblance of control in an out-of-control world.

God created us for peace. Adam and Eve walked in the cool of the afternoon with their Creator. The only humans who ever experienced true peace were responsible for its loss. In a split second of lust for greed and power, paradise was lost through rebellion against the very God they desired to emulate. With the pronouncement of the curse, God’s perfect couple fell from grace and their anguish is ours.

Mass murders shock us time and again. Terror strikes through home invasions, road rage, and world-wide threats. We do not know peace, yet it is how God created us to live. Augustine of Hippo wrote, “Our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” Restless describes our world.Created for Peace 2

We decorate our homes and sing our carols, celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace. Yet peace continues to evade us. Since that day in the Garden of Eden, the Prince of Darkness has ruled our world. Satan was given power to rule this world until everyone hears the good news of the Christmas Child born in a stable.

The peace God created us for is found only in the Christ Child whose birth we celebrate. We become most like God when we choose to live in peace, humble and lowly, like the Baby Jesus who came to earth in human form. When Jesus Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, rooting and grounding us in love, we will know the most peace found this side of heaven.

We can decorate our homes and sing our songs, but unless we invite the Prince of Peace to dwell in our hearts, we will not know peace. In opening our hearts to the Christ Child, we  become what God created us to be. As we learn to live like Jesus, Christmas will dwell in our hearts all year long, and with it, peace.
