“Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown…” Ezekiel 1:28
“Come quickly!” my husband called, as we stood atop the Grant Tower of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. Hurrying to his side, I saw a beautiful rainbow arching from one side of the loch to the other, about a mile wide at that spot. Placing his hands on my shoulders, he said, “Look down.”
I drew in my breath in amazement. The tower is about 50 feet wide, and the rainbow seemed to originate from the water near one corner and end at the other, forming almost a complete circle. Out of the hundreds of tourists strolling through the castle ruins that day, we were the only two in a position to see it.
God gave the rainbow to Noah as a sign of His covenant that never again would He destroy the entire earth by flood. When storms threaten, the rainbow is a reassurance that it is not the end.
A loving father uses teachable moments in the lives of his children to help them grow and mature. In the same way, God prepares unique moments in our lives to reveal Himself in new ways. Those moments help us capture the essence of a God who is far beyond our understanding and hold them in our hearts for the times when He seems far away. They come back to us as reminders of His power and glory when all is dark and He seems too distant to hear our cries.
That unique sight struck a chord in my heart, showing me God in an unexpected way. I can look back on that once in a lifetime event as a reminder that, at any given moment, there is always more to what God is doing than I can see.
Today’s shadows will, in time, give way to a new revelation of God which will grow us and mature us as His children. According to Paul, what we now know only in part, we will someday know completely.
Are you in a dark place today? Search God’s word for promises which relate to your situation, promises which shed the light of hope for the future. Fall face down and worship Him as one whose love is perfect and complete, full of awe and wonder. Hold those promises in your heart, and trust Him.
