Infinite Possibilities: The Plans & Purposes of God

Infinite possibilities. Thanksgiving is past and the anticipation of Christmas and the New Year begins. So much more than shopping, baking, decorating, and gathering with friends and family, the message of Christmas is for every person who ever lived. No matter our background, education, or ethnicity, the Creator of the universe invites each of us to join in His plan. I invite you to join me on Christmas expedition that leads through the beginning of the coming year. Open yourself up to the plans and purposes of God.

Infinite Possibilities

He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time … 2 Timothy 1:9

Mary knelt. Every limb trembled and grew weak. Her heart fluttered in fear and disbelief. “But I am a virgin. How can I bear a child?” There was no denying the presence of the brilliant angel before her.

She folded her hands across her abdomen, quivering as liquid fire flowed through her veins, settling hidden in her womb. She bowed low to the ground. “I am the Lord’s servant.”

When she opened her eyes, she sat alone, amazed, the homey familiarity of her surroundings offering no hint of the unspeakable miracle that had occurred. The son of the Most High—the Messiah grew within her. How would she tell her parents, her friends, and Joseph, oh Joseph, her betrothed? Would he believe?

Joseph, the carpenter, looked around his sparsely furnished room, sat on the edge of his bed, and rubbed his eyes. Sleep would not come this night. His heart was shattered—dreams crumbling like the dust beneath his feet. His beautiful Mary with child? Unless he took her as his wife, she would be stoned. But how could he bear watching her grow large with another man’s child? “Oh God, why?”

Suddenly the darkened room blazed like the sun and a figure fearful and powerful appeared. “Joseph don’t be afraid. The child conceived in Mary is from the Holy Spirit… Take her as your wife and name the son she bears Jesus. He will save His people from their sins.”

Joseph and Mary, a young couple filled with ordinary hopes and dreams, lived a poor, simple life in the lowly village of Nazareth. God’s choice of them as the earthly parents of His Son, the long-prophesied Messiah disrupted every aspect of their lives. It thrust a girl with an unplanned pregnancy and a poor carpenter from the ignominious village of Nazareth onto a path leading to Jerusalem and Egypt. When they accepted and cooperated with God, suddenly, they had infinite possibilities. Angels, shepherds, kings, and threats— nothing prepared them for the path God set them on, a path that changed the course of history.

The message of Christmas is an invitation to join in a magnificent adventure more unpredictable and fulfilling than our minds can conceive. God creates possibilities from the impossible, brings exhilaration to the boring, and opens avenues to use our abilities for purposes far grander than our dreams. There are infinite possibilities.

Accept the invitation of the Christ Child this Christmas. Abandon yourself to the Lord of the universe. Receive the infinite possibilities of God’s love and control. Life will never be the same. Human plans, priorities, and proprieties do not bind Jesus. There are infinite possibilities.
