Chocolate Applesauce Cake

My sister gave me this recipe many years ago. It is one of my very favorite cakes. I hope you enjoy the Chocolate Applesauce Cake!

Wandering Wednesdays

2 c. sifted flour

1 ½ c. sugar

1 ½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. soda

2 tbsp. cocoa

½ tsp. cinnamon

½ tsp. allspice

½ tsp. nutmeg

½ tsp. cloves

2 eggs

½ c. shortening

2 c. applesauce

½ c. chopped nuts

½ c. brown sugar

6 oz. chocolate chips

Sift flour, granulated sugar, salt, cocoa, and spices together. Set aside. Beat eggs and shortening together in a large mixing bowl. Add applesauce and sifted dry ingredients alternately to shortening mixture. Mix well. Pour batter into a greased and floured 13×9 inch pan. Combine nuts, brown sugar and chocolate chips in a small bowl. Sprinkle over top of batter.

Bake at 350 ° for 40 minutes.
