Too Much Fun by Norma Gail

Has your joy disappeared under a load of work and worry? Here is simple recipe for rediscovering your joy in the Lord! I hope it is meaningful, whatever your struggle today.

2MefromHim Devotional

For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 1 Thessalonians 2:19

“Ladies, I’m going to have to ask you to control yourselves.” The head pastor stuck his head in the door of our classroom during Bible study. “Some of us are trying to have a grumpy day!”

All the women laughed and he came on in to visit for a minute as I explained that our enthusiasm had moved us from the office wing to the nursery wing, and finally to a room built inside the former auditorium, so essentially, a room within a room.

“Well,” he said, smiling as he walked out, “you’re just having way too much fun!”

What a joy to lead a group of women so excited about the word of God and the joy of being together that we continually garner the attention of various members of our church staff. They never fail to comment on our great attendance, our laughter and love for each other, and our enthusiasm.

When traffic made me late a few weeks ago, I entered to find a new member happily bouncing a baby on her knee and getting acquainted, acting as if she had been there forever. As I thought about it, it occurred to me that this must be a taste of what heaven will be like when we arrive—joyful voices, love of the Lord and each other, and excitement over God’s word.

So many non-Christians labor under the delusion that Christians are a sour bunch, forced to spend hours reading the Bible and doing good deeds when they would rather be doing something fun. In reality, true Christianity is so different from what the world expects. When you love the Lord with all your heart, studying His word, fellowship with other believers, and serving those in need is treasured time. Even at my lowest, the company of Christians should be fun.  Our time with fellow believers should refill our empty tank and give us the recharge we need to be salt and light in the world around us.

When my fountain of joy is running dry, it is often because I am out of fellowship with other Christians. Meeting with others can bring me back to that abundant joy that only Jesus gives. In spite of the pastor’s teasing, there is no such thing as “too much fun” when you’re with fellow believers. After all, we’re forming friendships that will last through eternity.

  1. How much fun is this devotion?! Enjoyed! 🙂

  2. Very sweet word on joy!!

    • Thank you, Clare! I’m so glad you liked it!

  3. Chronic medical conditions often cause me to miss out on many things, including church and/or women’s ministries events. And, I’m always a little more down and don’t feel as upbeat as I normally do. But once I am again with my church family and friends, life just seems “better”. Enjoyed this post. 🙂
