The Hummingbird’s Lesson
Nature offers many lessons people would do well to study. Everyone loves hummingbirds, but they have traits we can recognize in ourselves. Spend a moment learning the hummingbird’s lesson and leave a comment. I would love to know what you think!

2MefromHim Devotional

And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
 Philippians 4:11

Hummingbirds are not as perfect as they look.

Throughout the summer, hundreds hover, and perch at the feeders around our mountain home. Sparkling like emeralds, rubies, and sardonyx, these jewels of God’s creation are greedy little creatures. No matter how much there is to go around, each one wants it all. I know what’s happening by the humming and squawking.

Hummingbirds confront each other in amazing aerial acrobatics, soaring, diving, chasing the others away. They create a racket similar to my distressed reaction when I don’t understand God’s will for me. To my shame, I have forced my way to my regret when surrendering to God would have accomplished everything without strife and maneuvering.

God’s sovereignty is not about me alone, but for everyone else, as well. Like the hummingbirds, my goals are temporary—God’s are eternal, and like them, my perceived needs are purely selfish. God’s knowledge of my needs is perfect, just as we keep the feeders full of sugar water all summer. If I seek God each day, determined to accept His grace as sufficient in every way, I have everything I need and more.

Everything the Lord allows me to experience is necessary to mature me and bring my faith to completion. When I cease striving and accept what God sends I feel His peace. I squawk less and hum more.

The Hummingbird's Lesson blog

I want to be in the center of God’s plan, accepting what He allows into my life without complaint. I want faith that accedes even when I don’t understand, to accept His best for me without complaint.

What steals my peace? What situations cause me to maneuver and complain?

When I surrender my desires to God, I receive more than I ever imagined from His glorious riches. I want to be a precious jewel in the kingdom of God, someone who brings joy to His heart as the hummingbirds on my patio bring joy when they hum happily and perch while drinking their fill.

  1. Norma, this is so good. Sometimes I think that understanding the sovereignty of God is the beginning of peace, much like the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. He is teaching you great things through this difficult and heart wrenching season. As you continue to submit to His wisdom and purpose, you will be able to minister greatly to others who suffer as well – He will be glorified. And in the glory, you will receive blessings untold. Thank you for sharing so beautifully and openly.

  2. Norma, I love this! And of course, agree totally with Nan’s words. I often sit and watch my little hummers and see the similarity of human behaviors. They never rest really, but stay in motion constantly. The Lord put me in a wilderness season to rest and I fought it every single day. After a few years, (yes, I’m more stubborn than most) I finally stopped wrestling and gave in. Resting in Him was the greatest lesson I ever learned. I’m so very sorry for all you’re going through and I’m praying for you. I have no doubt that you will come through this and be able to look back on it as a treasure from Him. I know it doesn’t seem that way now. If I can ever be of help to you, I’m only a couple of hours away!!

    • You are such a dear, Nancy! I do hope we get to meet sometime! I have had this voice problem before, so I do believe it will go away. I also believe God might be allowing all of these things to hit me at once so that the cause may become clear to the doctor. I so appreciate your prayers! Resting in Him when you have a lot that you want to do is hard, but I every day I pray to not miss His purpose and His blessing in this. Hugs!

  3. I love this Norma! Thank you for encouraging us in our walk with the Lord. 🙂
